The Lean Canvas is an adaptation of the Business Model Canvas by Alexander Osterwalder which Ash Maurya created in the Lean Startup spirit (Fast, Concise and Effective startup). The Lean Canvas promises an actionable and entrepreneur-focused business plan. It focuses on problems, solutions, key metrics and competitive advantages.
This exercise is best completed in short cycles and multiple times throughout the early stages of your startup. Things change so quickly in the startup world that continuously re-framing the value you are providing and how is crucial.
The steps can be completed in any order as generally teams move back and forth between canvas sections as ideas and insight emerge across the different sections. However on a first pass through the 9 activities – we recommend using the following progression (from top-to-bottom and left-to-right on the canvas):
